It's hard to express the range of emotions happening here this week. First, the war in Ukraine is heartbreaking, yet nothing can bring people (or nations) together like a common foe; so I choose to focus all my energy on wishing for peacemakers to prevail, as quickly as possible.
Breaking news closer to home for me is that NYC Test + Trace Corps will close down at the end of April. If you've followed Nine Muses Travel for at least last two years, you know I signed on to help at the start of the pandemic. For the city to re-open in spring 2020, there had to be a certain number of tracers hired, trained, and on the phones ready to go. Since then I've completed 454 case investigation interviews with New Yorkers and 472 contact intake interviews to block countless chains of transmission, booked two vaccine appointments last summer during a phone campaign, and helped 10 households schedule their booster appointments just last week. New York City truly is the best city in the world. I know because over the last two years I've spoken to thousands of New Yorkers across five boroughs (often with interpreters in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Creole, Korean, Bengali, Urdu, Italian, French, Yiddish, Arabic, several African languages, and many more). From parents of newborns to clients in their 90's, from the poorest to the poshest zip codes, from ill to asymptomatic, our citizens have been amazingly resilient and conscientious. I've listened and even laughed with them, helped with free food and hotel rooms, shared free city resources, and treated every person with the highest respect and deepest empathy. It's been one of the greatest privileges of my life to help my city in its time of need. It may all be coming to a close, but I'll forever be proud of the work of our NYC Test + Trace Corps and what we've all achieved.
You might be wondering how I was also able to sustain and grow Nine Muses Travel these last two years. I simply refused to accept any other option! My main priority has always been Nine Muses Travel. In fact just a few days ago Nine Muses Travel became accredited with the Better Business Bureau and carries an A+ rating. Lately inquiries are coming in fast for great last-minute spring break plans. Italy and Costa Rica are currently topping the list of requests, and I'm hoping to see more come in for my beloved Portugal, whose stats are stellar; 91.4% of Portugal's population is fully vaccinated, and 57.4% already received the booster.
