The cultural phenomenon Game of Thrones entertained millions for eight years, and whether or not you’re a die-hard fan, you’ve probably at least wondered about its stunning filming locations. Production of the show often took place in lovely Dubrovnik, Croatia, and the essence of the show is everywhere. As you walk the streets, you’ll recognize details from signature scenes from the series. Even if you never watched Game of Thrones (like me... shh!), this city’s rich history and culture is a joy to discover. Here are five top Dubrovnik fan attractions that everyone will enjoy.
The Jesuit Stairs These Baroque stairs appeared in Season Five during the infamous "Walk of Shame" scene. The stairs extend from Gundulic Square to St. Ignatius Church, embracing Spanish architecture. The iconic scene catapulted the location’s popularity and has become an oft-visited landmark. The view from the top gives you a great view of the city.
Fort Lovrijenac Often referred to as St. Lawrence Fortress, this fort is located on the outskirts of the western walls of the Old Town in Dubrovnik. The interior was used for filming the halls of the “Red Keep,” while the exterior captured Blackwater Bay. Visitors are welcome to navigate the fort and feel the echoes of its ancient history within.
City Walls The incredible City Walls were a major deciding factor with producers when selecting Dubrovnik to shoot the series. Countless scenes feature the Medieval walls including ones near the Narrow Sea, and many private walks were taken here on the show. Follow in their footsteps on a tour of the walls, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the old city. There are three main entrances, and while on tour you’ll see Lovrijenac Fortress and take in beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea.
Island of Lokrum This island is located less than a half mile away and is home to the popular “Iron Throne.” The throne is in the free Visitors Center, and you’re welcome to pose and take photos sitting on the throne! Other Game of Thrones points of interest near Lokrum include the botanical gardens featured in the city of Quarth, and the monastery.
Tresteno Arboretum This site is a major filming location, known as the gardens of Kings Landing and Red Keep on the show. Tresteno Arboretum is actually located 10 miles from Dubrovnik, and its intimate gardens perfectly provide the privacy necessary in the series. It’s one of the oldest arboretums in the world, and its design is simply immaculate.
