Getting Off that Road to Nowhere

"All I want is to breathe / Won't you breathe with me?" ― "Born Under Punches" by David Byrne & Brian Eno

Last week Broadway tickets went back on sale! Did you get any tickets? I decided I wanted, needed, to be in the house of a Broadway show for its performance back on stage. I was ushering a play on the last night of theater in New York, and I want to bear witness to its return. It was a tough choice, but I decided on David Byrne's American Utopia because I thought it'd be perfect, the catharsis of a shared musical experience to bring us together again. I love David Byrne and enjoyed working with him so much when I was in Artist Services at BAM and we produced a month-long residency of Paul Simon shows in April 2008. David was part of Paul's "Under African Skies' concerts, and I'll always remember dancing and singing in the wings with the gorgeous singer Kaïssa each and every time David Byrne performed his awesome version of "You Can Call Me Al." He would catch us dancing just off stage and smile back at us. It was those joyful memories I had in mind when I chose American Utopia.
