"What is delayed is not lost." ― Juliette Drouet
In two days my friend will finally step foot on a plane to London for an epic adventure - one we began planning three years ago. After London she visits Rome for walking tours and wine tastings, takes a train to Florence and says hello to David at the Accademia Gallery, drives to her quaint, Tuscan hillside boutique hotel overlooking San Gimignano, then flies to Sicily to finish in Taormina (pictured above) including an exciting 4x4 Jeep excursion to explore Mt. Etna, Europe's most iconic volcano. The trip was initially to celebrate a milestone birthday - departing May 2020. So, of course we had to act fast in 2020 but kept calm and carried on, and we rebooked the trip for 2021 because at the time a whole year later seemed a safe bet. Sadly, we had to move the dates again, and here we are now in 2022, two days to departure - finally! We met up last week, and it felt really surreal to review the final itinerary because 2019 feels like both forever ago and like yesterday. While her tours of Italy will be amazing, I suggested she not put outsized expectations on them; like, fireworks won't be going off as she walks down the street just because it was three years in the making to get her there (even if this is how I envision it happening)!
She's actually not my record-holder for total number of re-bookings due to world events. This honor goes to another old friend who also kept the faith and a great outlook as we changed plans from a magical, musical journey through Morocco (June 2020) to a wonderful walking tour through Wales (July 2021, a few days shy of the UK re-opening) to off-the-beaten track explorations of Georgia in May 2022 (only a day's driving distance from the Ukrainian border) to her fourth and last (we hope!) rebooking to Chile next month for "stellar" experiences in the Atacama Desert, Santiago, and surrounding Chilean wine regions.
My last rebooking of a rebooking of a rebooking is reserved for November 2022 - also for an old friend with a positive attitude, determined to get to the fun, fruity drinks at her all-inclusive at Grace Bay Beach, Turks and Caicos. Thankfully these clients are all dear friends, and it's always pleasant to hop on the phone with them, even if we're talking about having to change trip plans - again. They all trusted me to guide them through each cancellation, future travel credit processing, new trip reservations, and travel insurance implications. Over the years, I never charged anyone more for the extra trip work because none of it was intentional or even within their control. I say when you hire me, you gain my support until you return home - even if that means it takes years to depart.
I'm here for you, advocating for you, and celebrating you when you arrive at your destination - finally!
