"The strongest of all warriors are these two — time and patience." ― Leo Tolstoy

Over the last few weeks, people have been telling me it must be hard to be a travel advisor right now, but after enduring a global pandemic for years, it takes a lot to faze me now! It looks like the government shutdown will end this week, and luckily none of our clients had to deal with major flight delays or any cancellations. As a general rule, airports prioritize international flights, so that's definitely a plus. If you aren't a CLEAR member, this would be a great time to join because it allows you to jump to the front of the security lines at locations with CLEAR.

It will take a little time for the airlines and airports to get back on track, so here's a helpful list for everyone preparing to travel in the days and weeks ahead. This is great guidance, courtesy of the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA).

Preparing for your Flight

  • Arrive early because of TSA wait times. Download the MyTSA app for real time updates.

  • I recommend enrolling in CLEAR!

  • Aim for non-stop or early-morning flights, which are less likely to face cascading delays.

  • Smaller and regional airports may face greater disruptions due to limited staffing.

  • Book flexible or refundable fares in case of cancellations or airspace adjustments.

  • Enable airline apps and alerts and confirm contact details (phone and email) for updates.

  • Verify flight status before leaving home or your hotel.

  • Carry all necessary identification, travel documents and any required visas.

  • Pack essentials in your carry-on: meds, chargers, important documents, snacks, etc. in case you face unexpected delays.

  • Be flexible with your plans—such as alternative routes, dates or nearby airports—to reduce stress and find workable solutions if disruptions occur.

  • Day of travel guidance: use airport lounges and any premium credit card benefits to make delays more comfortable; check local airport social media feeds for latest info.

  • Airlines aren’t required to cover hotels or meals for weather-related issues, but many will for controllable delays (crew or maintenance).

  • If the airline is responsible for a delay or cancellation, check the DOT’s Airline Cancellation Dashboard.

And if you can still opt to take the train for your Thanksgiving travels, that might be the best way to go to avoid roads and airports which are ordinarily crowded that week already. Keep calm and carry on!
