Moroccan Style and Design

I got a wonderful request this week for a trip to Morocco over the holiday break for my client, her family, and friends, and designing a trip to Morocco transports me like no other destination. It's an intoxicating country of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes all its own and some of the world's most distinctive style and design. Here are some top highlights for when you make it to Morocco too!

Explore Behind the Scenes with YSL

An exclusive tour of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé’s private home, Villa Oasis, and the blue-of-my-dreams Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech is a must-do.

Relax at Dar Ahlam

The platonic ideal of a desert daydream: a 200-year-old rammed-earth confection of a hotel, surrounded by a palm grove at the edge of the desert. Sign me up for a couple of nights at the 14-room property, wandering through the lush garden (conceived by the designer of Paris’ Tuileries) and wearing something fabulous by the pool.

Shop Marrakech

A guide is absolutely essential for this one. Explore Marrakech’s medina, where everything from saffron to silk is on offer, and rigorously trained artisans sell rugs, brassware, silverwork, leatherwork, and other treasures.

Go Hot-Air Ballooning

Get up before sunrise for a midair breakfast floating over a dreamy Moroccan landscape.

Take Tile-Making Lessons

Spend an afternoon learning the Moroccan art of zellij – the gorgeous geometric tilework that decorates buildings and courtyards all over the country.

Visit Kasbah Tamadot

Richard Branson’s 28-room hotel, roughly two hours south of Marrakech in the Atlas Mountains, has connections with local craft centers, operated by the Eve Branson Foundation. Guests can visit any of them including the Tamgounssi Weaving Centre to meet the weavers and embroiderers.

Take a Photo Class in Fez

The medina of Fez, parts of which date to the ninth century, is widely considered one of the Arab world’s best-preserved towns. In spots, the lanes are barely wide enough for a donkey to pass through (no cars here). Vendors sell olives, dates, and spices from gorgeous pyramids; people in djellabas bustle through; tanners dye leather in massive stone vats. Take a walk through the medina with a photo instructor to capture scenes from life in this unparalleled place.

Traverse the Dunes

Sunset over the dunes, a feast under the stars, and a night in a be-pillowed tent with those tiny mirrors sewn into it.

Tagine-Cooking Class

Whip up a tagine of fragrant couscous and savory spices at a future dinner party. A cooking class would pull off this traditional Moroccan dish authentically – and use preserved lemons.
