"I learned how to navigate the world, and life's potholes, in Pittsburgh." – Frances Arnold

I returned this weekend from a week spent staying at a hotel on the campus of my undergrad alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh. Memories and echoes appeared everywhere I looked, and they were all happy, from such a heady time. I knew every moment of my college years was special as I lived it. How enormously lucky I am to have graduated from Pitt and started my adult life in such a beautiful place, with people who are still some of my closest friends today.

I suspect I took Pitt's architecture on campus largely for granted since I grew up nearby, but now that I've seen even more of the world, I felt awe-struck at the varieties of styles represented and number of historic landmark buildings there. The Cathedral of Learning (pictured above) is a 42-story marvel that was commissioned in 1921 and is still the world's second-tallest educational building, after the University of Moscow's main building. Studying in the soaring, castle-like main floor of this Gothic Revival skyscraper was distractingly stunning, and my love of modernist brutalist architecture was likely born at Pitt, surrounded there by prime examples. And every Pittsburgher knows the scenes from Silence of the Lambs where Hannibal Lecter is caged in the middle of a big, empty room were filmed in historic Soldiers & Sailors Museum, the country's largest memorial dedicated to all branches of military service. (The guard who got his face cut off and worn by Lecter was head of our theater department!)

If you haven't been to the 'Burgh, I've so many timeless places to recommend to you for your first visit along with excellent museums, art galleries, parks, long and rich American history, breathtaking viewpoints, and more. I haven't felt this much hometown pride in a long time. Spending a week walking beside some of your happiest memories will do that to you, it seems.

Curious about Pittsburgh, PA? Let's plan a really fun and fabulous getaway to the Steel City for you!
