The Hills are Alive! Austria in Vermont

Today I'm as close to Austria as you can get without leaving the U.S. I'm at the wonderful von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort in beautiful Stowe, VT for a unique and fun networking event organized by Austria Tourism. The photo above is the mountain view from my room's porch, at the very start of Vermont's tourism season. Reps from regional tourism offices, hotels, museums, and more from across Austria flew here to meet and share their news with hand-selected travel professionals like me. Getting to this majestic spot is easy. Fly to Burlington, VT then take a scenic drive just 45 minutes east.
The hospitality here is heartfelt, and it would be a lovely place to stay even without knowing its history. This is where the famous von Trapp family came after fleeing Austria! Maria's granddaughter joined a delicious dinner with us last night and told us more about her family's story. Award-winning Austrian chef, René Zimmermann, flew in to design our menu for last night's dinner with the lodge's kitchen team, who served us Austrian flavors using local Vermont ingredients. It was sensational!
When you think about reasons to visit Austria, gastronomy should be at the top of the list. The emphasis on local, seasonal ingredients and notable Austrian wines has inspired a new generation of chefs to totally reimagine Austria's traditional recipes. The culinary scene here is so good that Austria now has 101 Michelin-starred restaurants with a total of 124 stars - more per capita than France! Austrian chefs are so passionate, and the proof is just delicious.
After a long day of networking (and Austrian wine tasting) today, we're having dinner at von Trapp Brewing, which is just one of the many, many places you can visit on this expansive estate. You can sign up for yoga, visit the spa, go for a swim, explore 2,600 acres of trails (for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, walking, hiking), participate in movie night or board games, take a lodge and family history tour, visit the coffeehouse to soak in the mountain views, and much more. You can be very active or in full on relaxation mode here. Both feel exactly right - and very Austrian.
