One of my favorite ways to remember a trip that's made an impact on my life is with a "travel box." It began when I lived abroad in London for the first time in 1995. One day I found a pretty metal box with star cut-outs and began squirreling away little mementos into it like a sort of time capsule. It's got the strip of photo booth pictures I took when I needed one for my travel card - which is also in there, and other objects that take me back to a time and place I loved. Since then, when I'm on a journey that's taking on significant importance, I look around for the right travel box to house things like seashells, stamps, maps, photos, postcards, tickets. I choose a box to be specifically of that place, and antique shops are great places to find one that makes a unique keepsake on its own. A trip to Florida for my high school best friend's wedding ended with a few days of adventure on my own, and a little treasure chest now contains a map of Wekiwa Springs State Park (where we had a picnic), my ticket to the private river boat charter where her ceremony was held, and even a vial from the Fountain of Youth at St. Augustine. (I definitely took a swig while I was there!) Artifacts from my trip to Brazil are in a small handmade box of woven magazine pages made by students of a school inside a Rio favela. Memories of Greece, Hungary, Portugal and two unforgettable trips to Scandinavia are in beautiful vessels too.
