Best Places for Spring Flowers

"Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties." – Helen Keller
Days are getting longer, and Spring will be here before you know it! Do you have your Spring travels planned yet? Don't delay because you'll risk losing availability at more popular places. Already Japan is running out of guides during sakura, cherry blossom season. (Not too early to plan for 2027 actually!) There are beautiful spots all over to watch the world bloom again, and I'd love to help you see it.
Excerpt of 3/31/2023 Virtuoso article by Katie Kelly Bell can be found here.
These are the peak blooms worth traveling for.
As winter fades away, pockets of the Northern Hemisphere erupt in color, and flowers blanket fields, coastlines, and city streets in a rainbow of hues. The fleeting splendor of spring flowers is best experienced in person – to see some of nature’s most beautiful shows, plan a springtime trip to one of these destinations.
Maui, Hawaii
Hawaii’s volcanic soil is fertile ground for the state’s sacred plant, the endemic ohia lehua, a flowering tree that makes up some 80 percent of the islands’ forests. (The resilient tree can also root and grow in recent lava flows.) Its blooms year-round, but most profusely in the spring, when its scarlet flowers pop amid lush green foliage. Search for the blooms during a road trip along Maui’s Hana Highway, then retreat to the 320-room Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort for a Wailea spritz (rosé, gin, sparkling wine, and grapefruit) at the aptly named Lehua Lounge.
Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, Japan
Sakura (cherry blossom) season in Japan is a monumental event for the country, with viewing parties, picnics, and celebratory festivals honoring the pink petals’ annual appearance. Be aware that peak blooms also translate to peak crowds, so travelers should work with their Virtuoso advisor to plan for a seamless spring fling. One trip we love: a hotel-hopping journey designed by The Ritz-Carlton. After blossom viewing near the Imperial Palace and sakura-themed afternoon tea at the 245-room Ritz-Carlton Tokyo, travelers witness more than 3,000 cherry trees in bloom at Osaka Castle Park (while staying at the nearby 291-room Ritz-Carlton, Osaka), before a flower-filled finale at the 134-room, ryokan-inspired Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto.
The Burren, Ireland
Ireland’s windswept west coast is home to the famed Burren, a forbidding, moonscape-like terrain that offers surprisingly hospitable conditions for rare wildflowers. Here, travelers discover a range of wildflower species, including alpine, Arctic, and Mediterranean varieties. May is this craggy domain’s finest hour, and the 97-room Dromoland Castle arranges guided tours of the Burren followed by private perfume-making classes back at the estate, using botanical ingredients sourced from the area’s wildflower fields.
Texas Hill Country
A central Texas region marked by rolling hills and grasslands, Hill Country transforms into an azure wonderland every April when bluebonnets, the state flower, are on display. The Willow City Loop, which starts just outside Fredericksburg, is a 13-mile two-lane road winding through flower country, with views of bluebonnets, goldeneye phlox, plains coreopsis, and prickly poppies. Before hitting the road, sharpen your skills during a wildflower photography class at the 40-room Lake Austin Spa Resort, a 90-minute drive east of the loop.
Lisse, the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, Keukenhof is known to some as the “Garden of Europe”; to others, it’s tulip Narnia. An eye-popping 7 million bulbs (and 800 varieties) are planted annually across an 80-acre plot, which typically hits peak bloom around mid-April. The garden is a popular day trip from Amsterdam, where a tulip-themed experience at the 97-room De L’Europe Amsterdam includes a private transfer to Keukenhof and a Champagne picnic amid the flowers.
South Africa’s Western Cape
Spring in South Africa (August through September) is prime time to see the Western Cape’s fynbos biome – the world’s most diverse floral kingdom – in bloom. Rich with candelabra lilies, ice plants, and proteas, the fynbos home to some 9,000 floral species, two-thirds of which are endemic to the region. Cape Town’s 198-room Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel leads guests on an immersive guided wildflower hike that begins at the base of Table Mountain and concludes at the summit, just in time for a sundowner cocktail and canapés.
