Creating Your Own Butterfly Effect

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly."

– R. Buckminster Fuller

From where I've positioned my work desk at home, I need only glance up to see open skies, treetops, the majestic Manhattan skyline, and sometimes my fierce aerial neighbors - a pair of red-tailed hawks who live in the park across the street. This week I spotted new visitors, monarch butterflies, flitting past my window. There's a monarch butterfly garden in the park, and they must be quite happy to safely fuel up there for their long journey south. Have you seen any on their migration route this week?

I'd actually been thinking about the Butterfly Effect lately, even before the monarchs came to my window. The idea is basically that if you traveled back in time, even the slightest change to any condition could result in enormous consequences for the future. But few consider how making the smallest of changes to our routines today can have a far-reaching impact on our lives. Like so many, I'm sure, a few extra pounds have shown up over these last months, so when I got an email from my health insurance provider for free enrollment in an online weight loss and fitness program called Real Appeal, I signed up immediately. I started simply, with small adjustments to my lifestyle: keeping a food diary, drinking more water, going to bed early, and exercising before the work day begins. "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," and on this journey, I've got an app counting those steps! The weight has already started to come off, and even more importantly, I feel so great!

What kinds of plans can you make today for your own positive Butterfly Effect? I think about two clients who last week spent a rejuvenating getaway at Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Virginia, a short drive from their Maryland home in the D.C. metro area. I was able to secure them a bevvy of complimentary amenities including a free room upgrade at the time of booking. Getting this happy text made my day: "Everything is great! Was able to check in early at 1pm and secure a late check out at 4pm. Enjoyed the pool on a beautiful afternoon and getting an early dinner in town. Thank you SOOOO much!!!" This couple spent three days in the fresh country air relaxing, getting outdoors, and enjoying each other's company.

On the surface, their trip to Salamander Resort may seem like just a much-needed break, but really who can say how these days will echo through their next days, weeks, months, or even longer. The monarchs know; you need a change of scenery a couple times a year! The actions we take today, the moves we make, the choices, and the plans all impact how you will feel in the future.
