"I wasted time, and now doth time waste me." – Shakespeare's Richard II
This is one of my all-time favorite lines from Shakespeare, and it's stuck with me since I heard Fiona Shaw deliver it in London at the 1995 National Theatre production of Richard II. I reverently remember her realization, despair, then resignation all in this moment, on an utterly dark stage with just a sliver of light on her - from Richard's imprisonment at the Tower of London. The idea of looking back on your life only to see you've misspent it all on the wrong people, the wrong choices, the wrong paths is so tragic to me that I consciously strive to fill my days with as much knowledge, lived experience, laughter, and positivity as possible. It's another reason why travel is vital and so addictive; you get a jolt of all these at once! Richard II is full of wisdom on the value of Time. "O, call back yesterday, bid time return!" And of course, no one can. So we have to live our lives fully - right now.
Richard II has been on my mind because this weekend I ushered a couple of the performances running now at Theatre for a New Audience - sold-out readings of Richard II and Henry IV. Christian Camargo is a mesmerizing King Richard, and it's so enjoyable absorbing my favorite lines anew, as he sits upon the ground and tells sad stories of the death of kings. (There's a cancellation line an hour before each show, if you'd like to try for a ticket.)
