Ireland in the Off Season

"I wanted real adventures to happen to myself. But real adventures, I reflected, do not happen to people who remain at home: they must be sought abroad."― James Joyce, Dubliners

Ireland has become a top requested destination, so I decided it's finally time for my Dublin do-over. Why a do-over? The last time I went I was an undergrad student nearing the end of my semester abroad in London, and my flat mates and I booked a winter weekend trip to Dublin. However, the night before I was congested and tried every home remedy I could think of to feel better. I still went on that AerLingus flight the next morning, a flight I'll never forget because my eardrum nearly burst on the descent into Dublin. I was rushed off the plane to the airport medical office, given some antibiotics, then set off to explore with my friends, with a scarf wrapped around my ears and secured warmly under a hat. I look pitiful but intrepid in those Dublin photos, but it was all worth it. I got to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College and a George Bernard Shaw play at the Abbey Theatre, the national theatre of Ireland. A bonus was having to take the ferry to Wales (instead of flying) and train to London because that was such a scenic adventure as the train wove through unforgettable castles and countryside.

Now as I see the demand for Ireland increasing, it's time for my own return to properly give Dublin its due. One of my and my clients' favorite escorted tour companies is Globus, and they have a very cool series of low season itineraries called Escapes, all with way lower prices than high season rates. Right now, there's a 25% off sale on the Irish Escapes and North of Ireland Escapes tours, and some dates even have the single supplement waived. It's literally an offer I couldn't refuse. Maybe you too?

I chose an Irish Escapes tour in January and added pre-tour nights timed around TradFest, a traditional Irish music festival in Dublin from January 21-25, 2026. I'm really excited for the performances I'm attending by Julie Fowlis, Zoë Conway, Éamon Doorley & John McIntyre; Luka Bloom; and Ríoghnach Connolly. I'll also return to the Abbey Theatre and get to catch the world premiere production of Dublin Gothic, a new play by Barbara Bergin.

Then Globus' Irish Escapes will take me all over Ireland: Galway, Cliffs of Moher, Ennis, Adare, Killorglin, Ring of Kerry, Killarney, Blarney, Waterford, and Kilkenny. I'm intrigued by the dramatic idea of the wild Atlantic waves and wind at this time of year. When my tour ends back in Dublin, I've added an extra day for my own excursion to Northern Ireland: Belfast City Walking Tour, Bushmills & Giant's Causeway.

Are you interested in traveling in the off season too? Let me know! Let's just make sure none of us are ever flying while severely congested, okay? Here's to do-overs!
