On Monday night the participants of this year's Buy Tuscany event in Arezzo were welcomed by the Mayor of Arezzo and treated by performing local musicians and Arezzo Saracino flag bearers showing off their flag skills in the Grand Piazzo, where I took this photo. As I sipped a refreshing Hugo Spritz (prosecco, elderflower liqueur, seltzer, lime, and mint) and the moon rose (as foretold by the square's historic moon clock), I was entertained by the drums and flag routines, particularly because I was a color guard for three years in high school marching band and understood the level of difficulty to their flag tosses!
What is the Arezzo Saracino, you ask? It's a medieval, equestrian, jousting festival held twice a year, in June and September, and I can arrange for you to experience it like a VIP!

The Giostra del Saracino or simply the “Saracino” as it is known among the Aretini (inhabitants of Arezzo), is the event that represents at its most the traditions and the history of Arezzo. An historical event with very antique origins: 13th Century documents show how Aretins were fond of jousts and tournaments.
What an incredible historical moment to experience, the most important day in the life of the Aretini. Onirikos offers you a unique opportunity to experience this true Italian tradition.
During the day of the Saracino, with your professional English-speaking guide, you will enjoy a full day of Arezzo related activities, before the final race in the evening.
In the morning, with your professional guide, you will experience the colorful procession, involving more than three hundred participants, which winds through the streets of the city, accompanied by musicians and Arezzo's famous "Sbandieratori" standard wavers. Your guide will then escort you to your private seats in the apartment facing directly Piazza Grande, one of the most characteristic squares in Italy where the tournament will take place.
In Piazza Grande, after the performance of the flag jugglers and of the musicians and after the reading of the challenge to Buratto, the King of the Indies, the exciting Joust begins.
You will have a more “advanced” experience of one’s day in Arezzo, as you’ll visit places, usually extremely beautiful, which would normally have no public access.
After the Race you will have an exclusive visit to the Winner District, generally not often open to the foreign public. You will have the opportunity to attend the district aperitif. Between the wine, the food and the friendliest of atmospheres, you will surely understand how the Saracino is more than just a horse tournament. In the evening you guide will escort you to the traditional restaurant where you will enjoy an exclusive festive dinner.
