In honor of St. Patrick's Day this week, here's a fun list of some of the most iconic drinks from around the world to get your mouth watering for your next trip! Of course Irish coffee and Guinness both make the list! And let's be honest, we can all use a good, strong drink after the year we've had. Where are you headed on your next trip, and what will be in your glass when you get there? Let's start planning future culinary adventures for you, rich with local history and authentic cultural experiences. Cheers to you!
#1 Mojito - Cuba
It’s limey, minty, and incredibly refreshing! And on the warm nights in Cuba, a mojito is your go-to beverage as you come off the beach and head into dinner or kick back in Havana listening to live music on the sultry Caribbean nights. (Nine Muses Travel works with tour operators permitted to bring U.S. citizens to Cuba legally on enriching itineraries.)
#2 Negroni - Italy
Even those who claim to not like gin will be enticed by this Italian specialty. A Negroni contains equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. Garnished with an orange peel and stirred, not shaken (obviously). Go ahead and try this one before dinner, as it's a traditional aperitif.
#3 Dark and Stormy - Bermuda
Dark and stormy drinks, allowed. Dark and stormy weather, no thank you! Don’t worry, Bermuda knows the rules. This might be my favorite version of a mule. With dark rum, ginger beer, and a lime garnish, the Dark and Stormy is the unofficial drink of Bermuda. As if you needed any more convincing to visit this beautiful island!
#4 Piña Colada - Puerto Rico
Is a Piña Colada just the very best beachside cocktail? I think so! Try one of these creamy, cold, coconut cocktails while you’re sitting on a beach soaking up rays in Puerto Rico.
#5 Sangria - Spain
When vino tinto just won’t cut it anymore, sangria has got your back. Don’t be surprised by the deep spicy undertones in authentic Spanish sangria; it balances perfectly with sweet fresh fruit.
#6 Pisco Sour - Peru
You don’t have to be a local to know how refreshing a pisco sour is after a long day of hiking in Peru. It even has its own national holiday! Whether it’s the first Saturday in February or not, enjoy this creamy sour cocktail when you travel down to Peru.
#7 Kir Royale - France
You’ll feel like a royal sipping on one of these between shops on Champs-Élysées. The Kir Royale is a twist on the typical Kir as it uses champagne instead of still white wine. Sometimes topped with a few raspberries, it’s the perfect way to recharge after walking all day in Paris.
#8 Irish Coffee - Ireland
Wake up sunshine! You’ve got an Irish Coffee to drink. And with this sweet and spicy take on coffee, keep or hold the whiskey, it will not take much to get you out of bed. Ireland is a must on every bucket list. Their landscapes are almost as beautiful as their culture and people.
#9 Aperol Spritz - Italy
Get ready for an Aperol Spritz in 3..2..1! That’s 3 parts dry prosecco, 2 parts Aperol, and 1 part soda. This seriously refreshing aperitif should be your first drink order on your next trip to Italy.
#10 Mango Lassi - India
Creamy, delicious, and a great palate cleanser, Mango Lassi is a favorite after-dinner drink. In a country of such fragrant cuisine, it’s easy to understand why!
#11 Red Wine - Global
We all love our local winemakers, but let’s go global! Is Argentinian Malbec or Spanish Tempranillo more your style? Either way, you don’t have to be a sommelier to enjoy good red wine. I’ve got wineries lined up for relaxing getaways around the globe, just waiting for you to come for a tasting!
#12 Guinness - Ireland
There’s no place to drink a Guinness like the top of the Guinness Brewery itself! Called the Gravity Bar, visitors get 360-degree views of Dublin and a complimentary beer after touring the brewery. Now THAT’S how I like to enjoy my Guinness.
#13 Scotch - Scotland
If you know scotch, you know good liquor. With so many distilleries to choose from in Scotland, you don’t have to visit just one. Brave enough to take on the Malt Whisky Trail in Scotland's Speyside? This cultural trail features seven distilleries and one historical distillery. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you have a comfy bed to crash in.
#14 Eggnog - Europe
What is your favorite European holiday beverage? Tough choice between gluhwein and eggnog! Head to Europe this holiday season to test out both and get a taste of eggnog in the European Christmas markets. This drink is sure to warm you up after you walk through the chilly, light-filled streets.
#15 Cider - Greeks and Romans
Can’t decide between a nice glass of wine or an ice-cold beer on those hot summer days? Grab a cider, it’s the perfect in-between drink! While it may be more popularly known in England and Ireland, cider actually dates back to the Greeks and Romans. Either way, this bubbly beverage tastes good in any country. Make your next cold one on a beach in Santorini? Sure thing!
