"Freedom lies in being bold." — Robert Frost
Greetings from Pittsburgh, PA where I'm back again and celebrating the holiday with family and friends. I hope you're able to relax today and enjoy the 4th of July too! So far on this visit I've been to a party with birthday cake for the USA, caught Asteroid City with Dad, and with friends I learned more about Vikings at the Pittsburgh Science Center, strolled along the Pittsburgh waterfront, and shared a homecooked meal. Today I'll meet up with my cousin who's a Pitt Nursing School grad, and I'm so happy to have found a time when she's not working or sleeping after her night shift - not easy to do!
Although I've been independent minded my whole life, it means so much to have time with the people upon whom I depend for love, support, laughter, and lifelong memories. Independence doesn't have to mean isolation, and I value these trips to "the 'burgh."
I want to share an email from Hyatt I received a few days ago, right at the end of June (Pride month) as a follow up to the Proud Experiences travel event I attended in L.A. Their accomplishments are impressive, and so I've pasted just some of it below for you too. Happy Independent Minded Day!
Hyatt has a long history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community, and we’re proud to share a few ways we’ve made progress throughout the years.
In 2011, we launched HyPride, one of several internal Diversity Business Resource Groups (DBRGs) aimed at representing our colleagues’ diverse cultures, backgrounds & viewpoints, & give an opportunity to connect & work together. HyPride has chapters across the globe, where each group supports, celebrates & advocates for LGBTQ+ colleagues & guests.
In 2012, Hyatt became the first major hospitality company to offer domestic & same-gender partner benefits to our colleagues—including changes to leave-of-absence policies, which created FMLA-like benefits for domestic partners not required under federal law at the time. (Hyatt also covers HIV treatments & family formation benefits such as adoption assistance & infertility treatment coverage.)
In 2018, Hyatt became the first hospitality company to sign the United Nations’ Standards of Conduct for Business, a global initiative that encourages corporations to foster diversity & promote a culture of respect & equality both in the workplace & in the communities where they & their business partners operate for LGBTQ+ people.
In 2022, Hyatt was a public supporter of the Respect for Marriage act.
We are proud of this progress to date yet still recognize there is uncertainty & more work to be done to create a safe & equitable world for the LGBTQ+ community. We hope that our LGBTQ+ colleagues & family members celebrate with pride & confidence in the knowledge that we remain committed to serving as your advocate & safe space, while building a more welcoming, inclusive & caring world, together!
