Switzerland Comes to Brooklyn!

On Monday these sweet Swiss folks ventured to Brooklyn to meet with me at one of my "satelitte offices" - a local cafe in my neighborhood. We spent most of our time pouring over this rail map of Switzerland, because Roger and Laura (on the right) work with the Mt. Rigi Railway and Gotthard Panorama Express, respectively. Martin on the left is from the Swiss tourism office, and together we had a great afternoon coffee break agreeing on the many reasons Switzerland should be on your must-see list.

Let's start with just some of the highlights of the Swiss Rail Pass because it is AWESOME. What other country has a rail pass that includes all this? (There's a lot more it includes actually!)

  • Unlimited travel in Switzerland by train, bus, boat and public transport in cities

  • Free entrance to more than 500 museums

  • Valid for travelling on fixed and consecutive days: 3, 4, 6, 8 and 15 day passes available

  • Children under 6 travel free. Children 6 -16 years travel free if with at least one parent.

Switzerland is so compact and well-connected you can explore cosmopolitan cities like Zurich, Basel, and Lucerne (filled with art, delightful architecture, and amazing cuisine) and journey by train to witness jaw-droppingly beautiful scenery en route in a relatively short amount of time. You won't be able to look away from your train window; the views are dramatic. The Alpine hikes in the summer are epic, boating on any of its pretty lakes is unforgettable, and skiing in winter at St. Moritz is simply iconic. And regional flair is heavily influenced by neighboring countries across Swiss borders including Germany, France, and Italy. When I was a young backpacker, I chose Lausanne to visit in Switzerland so I could practice my French along Lake Lucerne and also to see the Collection de l'Art Brut Lausanne. Or you could live the "Dolce Vita" in the Ticino Region near Italy to experience wild contrasts from palm trees to glaciers. Switzerland offers so many authentic tastes of Europe all within one country!

Let's put it this way: Switzerland does not disappoint. Whatever you think it will be like, it will exceed all your expectations. If you're on a Rhine River cruise, give yourself time for pre and post Swiss explorations. Stay in a luxury spa hotel, savor world-class cuisine, and take in as much as you can of this country full of cultural and natural riches! Switzerland is one country with multiple languages, cultures, traditions, and flavors. If you want to see as much of Europe as you can, make your way around multifaceted Switzerland and get a feel too for Italy, France, and Germany all on the same trip!
